Review of “Does It Hurt?” By H.D. Carlton

If you want my rating and a non spoiler review of this book, here it is. “Does It Hurt?” by H.D. Carlton was atrocious and if I hadn’t made it 80% in then I would not have finished it. If you want to read a poorly written book with poorly written characters then go for it. I will not judge. However, Enzo really has no depth to him besides holding onto a pointless grudge and, is constantly invalidating the experiences of Sawyers tremendously traumatic past, because “his experiences were worse”. Honestly they were not nearly as horrific as her experiences and the fact that she even gaslights herself into thinking that she is a terrible person is ridiculous.

This book also contained a lot of smut, which is typical for this genre. However, it was not enjoyable and we are constantly told, to the point that it is obnoxious, that our female main character is a squirter.

The plot was all over the place and nothing made sense. To those of you who enjoyed this book I commend you and for those of you who came here looking for validation on not enjoying it, well, just keep reading because I really tear this book apart. Anything past this point will contain spoilers.

THIS PART CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!!!!

Seriously stop reading if you don’t want spoilers.

OKAY here is my spoiler ridden review of this absolute dumpster fire of a book. This is going to be all over the place because honestly my brain is cooked after reading this. NO hate to people who enjoyed it or the author. Please do not come for me.

Let’s just start with the fact that there’s so much wrong with this book, and yes it’s a dark romance, and yes it’s supposed to be unhinged but at 50% I was already saying “this is a 2 star read”. The only redeemable quality was the smut and trust me it’s spicy.  However, after 50% the smut wasn’t even good or able to save how absolutely trash this book is. Secondly what is with this storyline? It’s basically three storylines all happening at the same time. It was way too long and the climax fell so flat. For example, what even was Sylvester’s reasoning for being this sociopath he was? It just felt like a sloppy plot to get Sawyer a new identity by having Sylvester and his daughter, who had her mouth sewed shut, die.

My other gripes for this book are the amount of times the word “fuck” or a variation of the word was used. I searched it in the book and it was used 445 TIMES! I’m no prude but it was obnoxious. It made Enzo sound like an even bigger idiot than he already was. Sawyer was trying to be so edgy it was unbearable. Enzo reminded me of a jersey shore cast member. I imagined a juice head and don’t even get me started on his personality either. The man is a marine biologist with the brain cells of a rock… He’s all “IM GONNA MAKE YOU SUFFER” over getting his identity stolen. Yes, it’s a shitty crime, but he calls Sawyer “a soul sucking demon” because of it. Sir… she stole your identity. She didn’t chain your family down and light the house on fire. It just felt dramatic. Then at some point she gets a concussion and it’s all “we’ve gotta be careful you have a concussion” which is then followed by these insanely rough sex scenes where he’s drowning her in the water of this cave pool. I was just dumbfounded and thinking “what is even happening???”.

A lot of the writing was just sloppy and I lost hope after reading, “I stare up at the big ball in the sky that controls the body of water I’m treading in.” (H.D. Carlton). Really??? You couldn’t just say the moon???

Moving forward… Enzo and Sawyer ran around in circles this entire book. Just when you think they’ve moved on from the whole “she stole my identity!” garbage it takes until the book is almost finished for him to “forgive her”. Which was followed by stating law enforcement can’t punish her nearly as much as he can punish her…. just stop talking you absolute rocks for brains of a man.

This book was way overhyped, poorly written, and honestly burdensome to finish. If I hadn’t made it 80% of the way through I wouldn’t have finished it. I would’ve rather MY head be held under water until I stopped moving. I NEVER write reviews like this but honestly I have a personal vendetta out for this book and how trash it was. I couldn’t contain myself. Anyways, read it… don’t read it… who even cares. If you like this book good for you and if you agree with this review congrats you’re not alone! If I could give this book ZERO stars I would, but I respect the fact she published it and has people who enjoyed it.
