“The Ruinous Love Trilogy” by Brynne Weaver has, as you could guess, three books. The first in the installment is “Butcher and Blackbird”, which follows Sloane Sutherland and Rowan Kane. Both are infamous serial killers who ironically hunt and kill other serial killers. They are known by the names of The Boston Butcher and The Orb Weaver. The Orb Weaver, Sloane, is caught in a pretty grotesque situation when our sexy Irishman Rowan finds her. This is no ordinary meet cute as Sloane is trapped in a cell that serial killer Albert Briscoe put her in. Briscoe is dead from wounds she inflicted and with flies buzzing around and maggots on the floor, The Boston Butcher is there to put an end to Albert himself, however his victim is already dead. Upon speaking with Sloane he realizes he’s in the midst of The Orb Weaver herself. Rowan has almost a fangirl moment when coming to this realization. From there their friendship and immediate attraction blossoms, which ultimately sparks a yearly murder game. But as the years go on their attraction only becomes stronger and the tension sexier. This dark slow burn romance is a must read.
My thoughts:
Let me preface this by stating I ATE THIS SHIT UP! Left NO crumbs on the plate. So many people complained about this being insta-lovey. They’re SERIAL KILLERS of course they’re unhinged and prone to insta-love. Even with the insta-love it’s still a slow burn. The main characters don’t even have sex for the first time until over 50% into the book. But let me tell you… the slow burn is great and when they finally get together it’s chefs kiss. This book had me giggling and kicking my feet. The murder games are fun and contain gore. If you are not into detailed descriptions of gross things then I wouldn’t recommend you read this book. The smut was smutting and I would let Rowan Kane do despicable things to me.
