Review of “Under Your Scars” by Ariel N. Anderson

“Under Your Scars” by Ariel N. Anderson is a steamy and heartbreaking dark romatic tragedy involving a serial killer, a billionaire, and simple girl named Elena. When she’s about to be defiled in a dark alleyway in the dangerous Meridian City, The Silencer swoops in and saves her. Utterly freaked out by the fact that a serial killer saved her life, she runs away into the safety of her apartment. She is hoping that will be the first and last time she ever has to interact with the infamous killer. Little does she know it’s just the beginning and if only she knew what chaos is lurking right around the corner.

Okay… first off, I know this review took forever. That is because this book actually crushed me and took my soul to the depths of hell with it. I want to mention right here in the beginning of this review that this is a very dark romance. Our MMC is a MORALLY BLACK character. There is heavy mention of SA, self-harm, Stockholm Syndrome, and suicide. If these are topics that you would find upsetting, please do not read this book.

Anderson did a phenomenal job writing this novel. To write a dark romance with these themes it has to be done in a way that is digestible. Even though this book was over 600 pages long it never felt like it was repetitive or dragging. I had a genuine connection to the characters and about midway through the book I felt a shift as the reader. I was soooo into all the story and the smut was smuttin’… it was muy caliente. Then there is this massive life altering shift that happened. It changed how I viewed and reacted to the majority the main characters thoughts and interactions. It’s almost like you are meant to look at the first 50% through rose colored glasses, which is how I felt Elena viewed what was happening for the first 50% or so. The ending absolutely crushed me… screaming, crying, throwing up…. and I just want to say bravo and hats off to Ariel N. Anderson.

I also read the novella that went along with “Under Your Scars” titled “Delilah” and will leave my rating for that in this post as well. A more detailed review of the novella feels unnecessary as it is quite short and would give away major spoilers. The one thing I have to mention is how utterly disappointed and DISGUSTED I am with Elena’s brother Travis. That is all and thank you for reading!
